Bachelor of Social Work

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) provides students with diverse avenues for career advancement. Upon completion, BSW students are ready to enter the workforce with generalist knowledge, values, and skills to work with diverse populations across a range of settings. Students will be prepared for roles such as engagement with clients, needs assessment, outreach, service linkage, and ongoing monitoring in casework or similar positions. For those who would like to advance further, the BSW degree provides an opportunity to apply for an accelerated Master of Social Work degree through Advanced Standing. Only applicants who have earned a 3.0 from an accredited BSW program are eligible for consideration.

Rowan Core: 9 s.h.
All first-time Freshmen must complete the University Rowan Core Literacies. There are six literacies: - Communicative Literacy (COML) - 9 s.h. Satisfied by taking the following three courses:
- Artistic Literacy (ARTL)
- Global Literacy (GLBL)
- Humanistic Literacy (HUML)
- Quantitative Literacy (QNTL)
- Scientific Literacy (SCIL)
Majors may suggest courses to fulfill the above literacies and will be applied elsewhere. A complete listing of courses that fulfill the above literacies can be found here Undergraduate Program Requirements . Rowan Experience
Students must satisfy all three Rowan Experience attributes. Credits attached to the courses in this section will apply elsewhere. The attributes are as follows: - Broad-Based Literature Attribute (LIT)
- Writing Intensive Attribute (WI)
- Rowan Seminar Attribute*(RS)
Departments may recommend courses to fulfill these attributes. A complete listing of courses that satisfy these attributes can be found at Undergraduate Program Requirements . *The Rowan Seminar requirement is waived for all students transferring 24 or more approved credits into Rowan University at the time of initial entry. Non-Program Courses: 18 s.h.
Required Courses: 18 s.h.
Practice and Advanced Level Courses Required: 30 s.h.
*Students who earn at least a B in the “Required Practice and Advanced level courses” may be able to count these courses towards Advanced Standing for the MSW at Rowan or another MSW program accredited by the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE). ** Benchmark I: To be placed in Practicum I in the fall of senior year, students must: - Apply for Field Placement by the deadline listed the previous spring (typically March 1).
- Have at least a 2.0 GPA.
- Earn a satisfactory evaluation from the instructor and supervisor for the field component in SWK 01330 Social Work Policy and Practice.
***Benchmark II: To be placed in Practicum II senior year, students must: - Have satisfactory evaluation and passing grade from practicum placement I
- Meet CSWE nine core competencies
- Adhere to and uphold NASW Code of Ethics
Social Work Electives: 12 s.h.
Choose any FOUR of the following courses. Additional relevant courses may count with the approval of the program director. Total Hours Required for Graduation: 120 s.h.
Students must receive a grade of C or better in all courses satisfying Major requirements. Students must apply for SWK 01450 Senior Social Work Practicum in spring of their junior year. Students must complete 400 supervised hours at an approved social work field practicum and pass SWK 01450 Senior Social Work Practicum 1, SWK 01451 Senior Seminar 1, SWK 01460 Senior Social Work Practicum II, and SWK 01461 Senior Seminar II. |
