Bachelor of Science in Community & Environmental Planning

The Bachelor of Science in Community & Environmental Planning major is a professional degree program that prepares students for positions in local, state, and federal agencies, private companies, planning departments, engineering firms, and many others as well as graduate education in planning. The program introduces students to the diversity of the planning profession while providing an understanding of the broader purpose of planning and the opportunity to focus on practice and application through research and studio credits. It is intended to serve high-achieving students interested in advanced careers in the diverse and dynamic field of planning. The program at Rowan has a special focus on sustainable community design, land conservation, and the specific planning practices and challenges of the region.

Rowan Core: 9 s.h.


All first-time Freshmen must complete the University Rowan Core Literacies. There are six literacies:

Majors may suggest courses to fulfill the above literacies and will be applied elsewhere.

Rowan Experience


Students must satisfy all three Rowan Experience attributes. Credits attached to the courses in this section will apply elsewhere.

The attributes are as follows:

  • Broad-Based Literature Attribute (LIT)
  • Writing Intensive Attribute (WI)
  • Rowan Seminar Attribute*(RS)

Departments may recommend courses to fulfill these attributes. A complete listing of courses that satisfy these attributes can be found at Undergraduate Program Requirements .

*The Rowan Seminar requirement is waived for all students transferring 24 or more approved credits into Rowan University at the time of initial entry. 

Program Requirements


Non-Program Courses: 18 s.h.


Courses in this section cannot be in the major department.

Introduction to Planning & the Environment: 6 s.h.


Planning Methods and Practice Courses: 15 s.h.


Take the following courses:

Planning Program Electives: 15 s.h.


Choose 5 elective program classes (15 s.h.) in consultation with your academic advisor. It is highly recommended that courses chosen contribute to completing a minor such as GIS Minor, Sustainability Science Minor, or Environmental Studies Minor.

Capstone Experiences in Planning: 6 s.h.


Free Electives: 33 s.h.


Students should choose Free Electives that satisfy any Rowan Core or Rowan Experience requirements that are not fulfilled by Major or non-program courses.

Total Required Credits for the Program: 120 s.h.
