Bachelor of Arts in Journalism

The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism prepares students for a variety of journalism career opportunities in writing, broadcast, multimedia and editing/publishing.

Rowan Core: 9 s.h.


All first-time Freshmen must complete the University Rowan Core Literacies. There are six literacies:

Majors may suggest courses to fulfill the above literacies and will be applied elsewhere.

Rowan Experience


Students must satisfy all three Rowan Experience attributes. Credits attached to the courses in this section will apply elsewhere.

The attributes are as follows:

  • Broad-Based Literature Attribute (LIT)
  • Writing Intensive Attribute (WI)
  • Rowan Seminar Attribute*(RS)

Departments may recommend courses to fulfill these attributes. A complete listing of courses that satisfy these attributes can be found at Undergraduate Program Requirements .

*The Rowan Seminar requirement is waived for all students transferring 24 or more approved credits into Rowan University at the time of initial entry. 

Program Requirements


Non-Program Courses: 18 s.h.


Courses in this section cannot be in the major department.

Major Requirements


Journalism Electives: 12 s.h.


(Each student must complete 12 s.h. from the following list.)

Free Electives: 54 s.h.


It is highly recommended that all Journalism Majors take at least one semester of Journalism Internship as part of their Free Electives. Students can use other Free Electives to earn another Major, Minor or Certificate of Undergraduate Study. 

Total Hours Required for Graduation: 120 s.h.


Students must earn a grade of at least a C minus in each course under Core Requirements and Sequences. C minus or above is required in all prerequisites to other courses.

Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in their 39 credits of the major, and a 2.0 overall GPA to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Transfer courses of 300 level or above that correlate with Rowan’s courses will be accepted in the major.

Students may earn up to 9 credits in internships. Any other internships can be taken on their own, but not for credit.
