ANTH 02359 - Borders, Boundaries, and Frontiers

Credits: 3

This course explores the significance of “borders,” “boundaries,” and “frontiers” from diverse social science perspectives. This course is a historical, comparative, and cross-cultural examination of borders on a global scale by focusing on the US/Mexico border, Canada/US border, the borders of the European Union, and others. We will examine how borders and boundaries shape and reshape how we understand the concepts of ethnicity and ethnic groups, the nation and state, other modes of belonging, and how these are in flux under contemporary conditions of globalization.
