The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering program emphasizes advanced chemical engineering skills, project management skills, engineering design, and fundamental and applied research, all of which prepares students and working engineers for successful careers in advanced technical fields. This program includes the following focus areas: additive manufacturing; artificial intelligence; bioengineering; bio-based processing; catalysis; crystallization; experimental design and data analysis; machine learning; pharmaceutical engineering; polymers and composites; process design and optimization; reaction engineering; renewable energy; sustainability; and tissue engineering

Tracks

The program includes two tracks. Each has different course and graduation exit requirements which are outlined below.

Thesis Track: The thesis option requires the completion of 30 semester hours, 6-9 of which are in thesis research/engineering project.
Non-Thesis Track: The non-thesis option requires the completion of 30 semester hours of coursework.

CHE 06514 - Transport Phenomena for Engineers Credits: 3
CHE 06515 - Advanced Reactor Design Credits: 3
CHE 06586 - Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics. Credits: 3

Required Business course: 3 s.h.

Choose one course from among the following (or an approved equivalent):

MGT 06510 - Strategic Engineering Management Credits: 3
MGT 06666 - Managing Engineering Teams Credits: 3
MGT 06677 - Management Skills for Engineers Credits: 3

Required Math Course: 3 s.h.

MATH 01515 - Engineering Applications of Analysis Credits: 3

Graduate Technical Electives: 6-15 s.h.

For Non-Thesis Track: student must fulfill 15 credits of graduate-level elective courses.

For Thesis Track: student must fulfill 6 credits of graduate-level elective courses. Choose from approved graduate-level electives offered by the Chemical Engineering program. The eligible courses include, but are not limited to the following:

CHE 06510 - Biochemical Engineering Credits: 3
CHE 06512 - Safety in the Process Industries Credits: 3
CHE 06518 - Polymer Engineering Credits: 3
CHE 06530 - Experimental Methods in Chemical Engineering Credits: 3
CHE 06575 - Biopharmaceutical and Industrial Fluid Mixing Credits: 3
CHE 06577 - Advanced Engineering Process Analysis and Experimental Design Credits: 3
CHE 06578 - Tissue Engineering Credits: 3
CHE 06587 - Process Optimization Credits: 3

Master’s Thesis Project: 9 s.h.

For Thesis Track only: In lieu of 9 credits of technical electives, student must register for Master’s Research and Thesis totaling 9 credits, and pursue and complete a Master’s thesis project.

ENGR 01599 - Master’s Research and Thesis Credits: 1 to 9

Total Required Credits for the Program: 30 s.h.

Graduation/Exit, Benchmark, and Thesis Requirements

For Thesis Track: Student must register for Master’s Research and Thesis totaling 9 credits, and successfully defend their thesis.

Minimum Required Grades and Cumulative GPA

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is a Category 2 program. Under this program, the student must earn no grades lower than a B- and must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0.
