Accelerated Dual Degree: Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science, Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning

Rowan Core
All first-time Freshmen starting in Fall 2018 or after must complete the University Rowan Core Requirements as described in Undergraduate Program Requirements .
Non-Program Courses: (minimum 18 s.h.)
Summary of Major Requirements
- 6 s.h. of Introductory Geography Courses
- 31 s.h. of GIS Foundational Courses,
- 6 s.h. of GIS graduate ADD Elective Courses
- 3-4 s.h. of Quantitative Methods Elective
- 12 s.h. of Geography Program Electives
58-59 s.h. total
Introductory Geography Courses: 6 s.h.
Take two of the following courses.
Required GIS Foundational Courses: 31 s.h.
Elective GIS ADD courses: 6 s.h.
Majors must take any two additional approved graduate ADD GIS or related courses (6 s.h.), selected in consultation with the program advisor.
Quantitative Methods Electives: 3-4 s.h.
Chose one of the following courses.
Geography Program Electives: 12 s.h.
Majors must take four additional courses (12 sh) offered within the department, selected in consultation with the Geography Program Coordinator or academic advisor. It is imperative that these courses are chosen to complete a second major, minor, or CUGS offered by the Department.
Free Electives: 34-35 s.h.
Students should choose Free Electives that satisfy any Rowan Core or Rowan Experience requirements that are not fulfilled by Major or Non-Program courses.
Total Undergraduate Hours: 108 s.h.
Total Graduate Hours Applied to the BS: 12 s.h.
Total Credit Hours for the Accelerated BS in GIS: 120 s.h.
Course Requirements for the Accelerated M.S. in Urban & Regional Planning
Required Core Courses: 27 s.h.
Students should select the course sequence in consultation with the program coordinator and/or advisor.
Approved Electives taken as an undergraduate: (9 s.h.)
Electives: 10 s.h.
Students take an additional 10 s.h. of electives in consultation with and approved by the program advisor.
Total Required for the Graduate Degree: 46 s.h.
(12 s.h. are taken as an undergraduate student).
Total Requirements for the Accelerated Dual Degree: 154 s.h.
Requirements for Admission and Graduation
Admission
Applicants to the accelerated program will submit all application materials by January 15 of the spring semester of their third year at Rowan (nominally “junior” year). The graduate admissions committee in the Department of Geography, Planning & Sustainability will review the applications and students will be notified by February 1;
Application for admission requires:
- A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 in undergraduate coursework
- A complete online application including personal statement
- A letter of nomination/recommendation from Department of Geography, Planning & Sustainability
Graduation
To graduate from the accelerated BS/MS (non-thesis) dual degree program in GIS and Urban & Regional Planning, students must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of all program requirements for the BS in Geographic Information Science (maintain cumulative GPA of 2.0).
- Completion of all program requirements for the MS in Urban & Regional Planning (maintain cumulative GPA of 3.0 as well as obtain no grade less than B- in any of the graduate courses).
- Maintain satisfactory progress through the program. Upon completion of the requirements above, the student will be granted both a Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science and Master of Science in Urban & Regional Planning.
Student Status
Students enrolled in the accelerated BS/MS Program will pay undergraduate fees for the first four years of the program and they will start paying the graduate tuition starting in their fifth year. Students will be allowed to register for 6 s.h. of graduate courses for two semesters in their undergraduate senior year (nominally the fourth year). Students must maintain full time student status during the entire 5-year program. Students will be expected to maintain satisfactory progress through the program. Satisfactory progress will be defined by the following parameters:
- Earning at least a grade of B- in all the graduate courses.
- Any student who fails to maintain satisfactory progress as described above will be placed on probation within the program for one semester- if the performance still does not improve, they will be dropped from the graduate program. If the student has not already earned the BS in GIS, they will be re-admitted into the BS subject to the requirements of that program.
- Students with extenuating circumstances may request an exception to this requirement by obtaining written approval of the Program Coordinator of MS Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as their Undergraduate Advisor, and other approvals if needed under University policy.
Students who enter the accelerated MS program but do not maintain satisfactory progress or opt-out of the MS degree will be allowed to apply up to 12 credits of Urban & regional Planning coursework credits as restricted or free electives toward the BS GIS degree. If the student opts out before 12 credits have been completed in the Urban & Regional Planning program, any remaining credits to make up the required 120 credits for the undergraduate BS GIS degree will be taken using traditional coursework at the Glassboro campus.
