The Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) in Lifetime Education Activity Program (LEAP) is a university-wide program, offering a variety of physical activity experiences. The focus of the CUGS in the Lifetime Educational Physical Activity Program (LEAP) is on encouraging students, faculty, and staff to explore human movement and its impact on their health, society, quality of life, and where the “work, live, and play” (APHA, 2023). Through participation and engagement in a variety of educational physical activity experiences students will also learn about skill development, the history, rules, strategies, and terminology of sport and physical activity, and the social-emotional learning skills needed to participate in physical activity and community sports.
Participants will be motivated to engage in daily physical activity for a lifetime and enhance their physical literacy, and health literacy (SHAPE, 2023). Additionally, the CUGS in LEAP aligns with the national Joint Call to Action to Promote Healthy Communities and the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans which state, “Being physically active is one of the most important actions that people of all ages can take to improve their health” (American Public Health Association {APHA}, 2023; Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion {OASH}, 2021, p. 6).
The CUGS in LEAP program courses can be taken without enrolling in the LEAP CUGS and are developed to encourage and promote physical and health literacy to “build a healthier America” (SHAPE, 2023; Healthy People 2030).
