The Esports Minor will be an interdisciplinary minor between the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts (CCCA) and the School of Professional Studies. The minor offers students the opportunity to acquire and develop foundational knowledge of the media and industries that support professional, competitive video gaming. Students will train in the areas of communication, production, and critical reflection essential to careers in esports. This minor is offered by the faculty of the Journalism Department and School of Professional Studies and is designed to serve students from other Sports Communication & Media (Sports CaM) disciplines as well as those students with majors outside of Sports CaM. The Esports Minor connects the esports coursework across the Sport Communication & Media Esports Concentration (C609) and CUGS (U193) to the esports coursework available in the Professional Studies CUGS. This allows students to pursue a variety of majors and other minors which pair with the unique careers available in the esports industry. Students develop forward-thinking skills and foundational industry-specific knowledge in a developing academic and professional field. The Esports minor stipulates 9 semester credit hours of required courses that provide a fundamental grounding in esports business knowledge, global culture, and historic development. These courses include an introduction to esports business, a DEI-focused, theory-based course, and extensive coverage of esports’ history. In addition to these fundamental courses, 4 elective courses assure the students an opportunity to emphasize a particular area of interest.
