Students pursuing the B.A. in Modern Languages & Linguistics (MLL) are required to select an Advanced Language Concentration (18 s.h.) for the program. The following language options are available for the Advanced Language Concentration, all of which can be completed at Rowan: American Sign Language (ASL), Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The Advanced Language Concentration for MLL should be declared with the Academic Advisor, Cindy Finer (finer@rowan.edu).
Prior to beginning the program, students with existing proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) should contact Prof. Melissa Screven (screven@rowan.edu) for a placement interview. It is possible for students to earn credits for the courses that they skip via the Authorization for Credit by Examination process, and these credits are counted in fulfillment of program requirements. As a graduation requirement, students with the Concentration in Advanced American Sign Language are required to take Avant Assessment’s STAMP exam in ASL as a final measure of language proficiency; the cost for this is covered by the Department of World Languages.
In addition to the requirements for the B.A. in Modern Languages & Linguistics, students with the Concentration in Advanced American Sign Language must take the following courses, all of which must be passed with a letter grade of “C-” or better, and no
courses may be taken as P/NC.
