The CUGS in Middle East Studies aims to develop students’ understanding of the history of the Middle East from the rise of Islam in the 7th century C.E. and the complexity of contemporary issues and problems; it also aims to develop skills that will help students professionally after they graduate.

Program Requirements

The Middle East Studies CUGS requires 12 s.h. or four courses taken from at least two departments:

HIST 05383 - Islamic Civilization Credits: 3 *
or
HIST 05363 - Ottoman History Credits: 3 *
POSC 07345 - Government and Politics of the Middle East
or
HIST 05308 - Modern Middle East Credits: 3 *

Additional Elective Courses:

Two electives at any level from courses listed below. Students enrolled in this CUGS may get a prerequisite waiver for any of the history courses listed.

HIST 05383 - Islamic Civilization Credits: 3 (if not taken as a core course)
HIST 05363 - Ottoman History Credits: 3 (if not taken as a core course)
HIST 05308 - Modern Middle East Credits: 3 (if not taken as a core course)
POSC 07345 - Government and Politics of the Middle East (if not taken as a core course)
HIST 05404 - Arab-Israeli Conflict Credits: 3
HIST 05444 - Islamist Movements Credits: 3
LAWJ 05415 - Selected Topics in Criminal Justice Credits: 3
POSC 07489 - Seminar in Political Science - WI Credits: 3 *
ARAB 12101 - Elementary Arabic I Credits: 3
or
ARAB 12102 - Elementary Arabic II Credits: 3
or
ARAB 12201 - Intermediate Arabic I Credits: 3
or
ARAB 12211 - Intermediate Arabic II Credits: 3
(i.e. only one language course may count towards the CUGS).

*Note: HIST 05306 - Historical Methods-WI is a prerequisite for both courses; students enrolled in this CUGS can receive a prerequisite waiver after completing COMP 01112 - College Composition II ; contact Ms. Christine Larsen-Britt, Larsen-britt@rowan.edu, for a waiver.

*Note: POSC 07360 - Methodology and Statistics in Political Science Research is a prerequisite) with approval of Dr. Somdahl, coordinator of the Middle East Studies CUGS, and a final paper written about the Middle East.
