Public History is usually defined as history beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. Public Historians work as preservationists, in archives and research libraries, and as museum professionals. They may be curators, museum educators, exhibit producers, oral historians, and even community activists. The CUGS in Public History will interest students who hope to work in historical, natural history, or anthropological museums, historical societies, federal, state and local government, archival management, etc. The Certificate requires 15 s.h. of courses related to public history, including three core courses and two electives.

HIST 05387 - Public History Credits: 3 *
HIST 05495 - Internship in History Credits: 3
or
INTR 20399 - Internship In Applied Liberal Arts Credits: 2 to 6 (at a site approved by the coordinator)

Electives:

Any TWO of the following courses:

HIST 05495 - Internship in History Credits: 3 (if not taken as a core course)
INTR 20399 - Internship In Applied Liberal Arts Credits: 2 to 6 (Another 3 s.h. at a site approved by the coordinator)
HIST 05386 - History of New Jersey Credits: 3
ANTH 02203 - Introduction to Archeology Credits: 3
ANTH 02270 - New World Archaeology Credits: 3
ANTH 02280 - Old World Archeology Credits: 3
ANTH 02310 - Native North America Credits: 3
ART 09301 - Digital Media and Techniques Credits: 3
WA 01322 - Writing for the Workplace-WI Credits: 3
RTF 03295 - Introduction to New Media Credits: 3
MKT 09200 - Principles of Marketing Credits: 3
PR 06350 - Introduction to Public Relations Credits: 3 (all students may take an online section; students who are not Public Relations majors may be signed into a regular section
ADV 04330 - Introduction to Advertising Credits: 3 (All students may take an online section; students who are not Advertising majors need to be signed in a regular section)

Total Required Credits for the Program: 15 s.h.

* Note: Composition II (COMP 01112 ) is a prerequisite, but students pursuing this CUGS who have completed Museum Studies (ANTH 02290 ) will be given a prerequisite waiver
