The CUGS in Diversity & Inclusion in Professional Settings deepens understanding about the causes and effects of diversity in the workplace and the potential for subtle bias affecting visible and non-visible minority groups. Valuable skills will be imparted for relating to diverse colleagues and collaborating on intercultural teams. A field placement in one of a variety of career areas provides practical experience observing and applying the principles learned.

Program Requirements

The requirements include the following five (5) courses:

Three core courses are required for all:

SOC 08488 - Critical Race Theory: Social Justice, Advocacy and Intervention Credits: 3
or
SOC 08146 - Identity, Culture, and Democracy: Being an American Credits: 3
INTR 01130 - Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies Credits: 3
CMS 04360 - Intercultural Communication Credits: 3

One discipline-specific course from the following is required:

AFST 11104 - Introduction to Africana Studies Credits: 3
ANTH 02275 - Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity Credits: 3
CMS 04310 - Images of Gender in Popular Culture Credits: 3
CMS 04320 - Communicating Gender Credits: 3
ENGR 01217 - Engineering in a Global Context Credits: 3
ENT 06240 - Entrepreneurship and Innovation Credits: 3
PHIL 09326 - Philosophy of Mind Credits: 3
PHIL 09327 - Philosophy and Race - WI Credits: 3
PHIL 09531 - Applied Ethics (advanced undergraduates may enroll)

One practical application (field experience/internship) from the following is required (approved topics only):

ENGR 01303 - Junior Engineering Clinic Credits: 2
or
ENGR 01403 - Senior Engineering Clinic - WI Credits: 2
INTR 20399 - Internship In Applied Liberal Arts Credits: 2 to 6
HSRV 01311 - Field Experiences in Human Services I Credits: 3
SOC 08494 - Field Experience Seminar in Sociology - WI Credits: 3 to 6

Total Required Credits for the Program: 15 s.h.

To be awarded the CUGS in Diversity and Inclusion in Professional Settings, students must complete all required coursework in accordance with University requirements for good standing. Students may not double-count more than 2 courses for both their major and the CUGS.
