As a field of study, photonics can be broadly defined as the study of the generation, detection, and manipulation of light. Photonic technology is foundational to all modern technologies ranging from telecommunication to biomedicine to material science. Photonics is to the photon what electronics is to the electron. This certificate of graduate studies in photonics will prepare students to enter the high-tech workforce in optics research and development. The required courses give students a solid theoretical background, extensive hands-on experience, and in-depth knowledge of photonics including optical design, lasers, and fiber optic communications.
