A liberal arts degree program for students who desire a broad academically-oriented education with an emphasis in art, or those who intend to become art teachers. With the Bachelor of Arts degree, students take studio and art history courses focused on the creation and study of visual arts along with a greater number of liberal arts courses for a well-rounded education that offers diverse career options in arts-related fields

Rowan Core: 9 s.h.


All first-time Freshmen must complete the University Rowan Core Literacies. There are six literacies:

Majors may suggest courses to fulfill the above literacies and will be applied elsewhere.

Rowan Experience


Students must satisfy all three Rowan Experience attributes. Credits attached to the courses in this section will apply elsewhere.

The attributes are as follows:

  • Broad-Based Literature Attribute (LIT)
  • Writing Intensive Attribute (WI)
  • Rowan Seminar Attribute*(RS)

Departments may recommend courses to fulfill these attributes. A complete listing of courses that satisfy these attributes can be found at Undergraduate Program Requirements .

*The Rowan Seminar requirement is waived for all students transferring 24 or more approved credits into Rowan University at the time of initial entry. 

Program Requirements


Major Requirements


Non-Program Courses: 18 s.h.


Courses in this area cannot be in the Major Department.

  • Any Music, Theater, or Dance course that satisfies Artistic Literacy (ARTL) requirement.

Art History: 9 s.h.


Primary Studio: 18 s.h.


Primary Studio and support courses are determined with academic and studio advisors. Studios include Animation, Biomedical Art and Visualization, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Metals/Jewelry, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture.

Elective Courses: 54 s.h.


Students should choose Free Electives that satisfy any Rowan Core or Rowan Experience requirements that are not fulfilled by Major or Non-Program courses.
